In ”St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves”, Russell writes a short story regarding a group of girls, whose parents are werewolves. Their parent sent them to St. Lucy’s to be reformed into civilized humans and become functional members of society. Russell choses to divide the text into sections using an epigraph explaining what is expected in that stage, consisting of an excerpt from a fictitious guide, The Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock. In Stage Two, Russell use the epigraph to describes how the wolf girls should behave and react in this stage. Some characters developed in this image and some stray from the description.
When the answer to “were you raised by wolves?” is two-in-one: insult and factual– at least to the wolf girls. Karen Russell’s “St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves,” tells the tale of the daughters of werewolves and how they assimilated into human culture. Acting as a metaphor for the residential schools used to convert the children from indigenous tribes in North America to align with the European culture and ideas of the settlers. Russell uses inserts from the “Jesuit Handbook on Lycanthropic Culture Shock” (264) to provide insight into how the wolf girls are tamed into exemplary citizens upon their graduation. The actual building of St. Lucy’s is a symbol of cultural assimilation, language and names, and home.

Nate Blakeslee stars in the book with background information on the history of wolves in Yellowstone, and how they almost went extinct in the early 20th century. Blakeslee also goes through the main basics of wolf packs and O-six, who is the main character in this quite unique non-fiction novel. Then he introduces Rick McInture who is a wolf researcher and watcher who is very passionate about wolves and can be seen throughout the book. The author talks about his routine and his methods of trying to track down wolves, such as using collars with radio signals and special tags on them as well. A better understanding of the wolves’ social dynamics and interaction with wildlife is made clear through the perspective of Rick, and makes the story intriguing.

Over the years, monsters have changed from beasts to humanoid creatures in order to teach humanity to avoid certain thoughts, actions, behaviors and even people. About twenty years ago, before Twilight and the modern version of Dracula played by Orlando Bloom, vampires were always depicted as the evils of society and commonly represented as the lower chains of the social class that acted as parasites to the upper and middle classes. According to Lane’s article, “There Goes the Neighborhood,” she explains how a book written in the mid-1950’s called I Am Legend, depicts the vampires in the story as the low-class colored people of society. Because of the lower class being represented as the evil monsters of society, they were resented and discriminated against. But recently, vampires are now categorized as the rich and white upper-class people.
Mowat and his colleagues had the wrong idea about the wolves and this novel allows the reader to be able to see the truth. Mowat spent enough time familiarizing himself with the wolves so that they did not see him as a threat. As his trip came to an end, Mowat had to investigate the wolves’ den. Both Ulrich and Georg were initially convinced that whoever’s group was first to arrive would kill the rival forester. After their reconciliation, the men believed that the first group of foresters would save the former rival.

Vampires are a classic and incredibly versatile kind of monster across all kinds of media, certainly not just limited to videogames. A big part of that undoubtedly stems from how many cultures around the world have variations on the vampire present in their folklore – usually in the form of some sort of otherworldly something that swoops in and saps the life force of humans and/or animals before slipping off into the night when they've finished. In Angela Carter’s “The Company of Wolves” the wolves are perceived as dangerous and aggressive creatures posing threat to humans. In small villages, the children are given weapons just to protect themselves from the evil wolves. However, in Angela Carter’s story, a male can turn into a wolf. This undermines the binary oppositions for Carter’s story. Aaron Devor states in “Gender Roles Behaviors and Attitudes”, how the females are dependent and how the males are independent and much more aggressive.
Wolves, when in groups, are universally threatening and recurrently feared. This being known, they are often portrayed as an evil or opposing force. Although, on occasion, they have also been known to be referred to as “noble creatures who can teach us many things.” (http://www.wolfcountry.net/) But consequently, despite the popular interpretation of wolves and their characteristics, each story presents its own interpretation of their many characteristics.
