On December 14, 2017 the F.C.C., the Federal Communications Commission, voted 3-2 in favor of repealing Net Neutrality laws set in March 12, 2015 made by the F.C.C. under President Obama’s administration. This decision reversed the laws that prevented broadband companies from favoring one kind of content over another, and the regulations reclassified the internet as a telecommunications service, thus putting the internet under regulations of Title II of the Communications Act. However, with the F.C.C.’s ruling the internet is no longer under these regulations, and the regulations will be lifted on April 23, 2018. Net Neutrality makes promoting certain data at the expense of other data illegal which prevents allowing information from IoT systems used in the medical field and other new technologies from running faster at the expense other less meaningful data. This means that data sent from a remote health monitoring system is treated the same as data sent from a video game. Proponents point to this scenario as an example of Net Neutrality hurting more than helping. Many of the new technologies require a large amount of bandwidth and would only work with internet priority. Many of the internet providers are hesitant of developing expensive and high tech systems due to the regulations and red tape. (Shah) As a result of this hesitation, proponents suggest that the evolution of the internet is being held back and restricted under Net Neutrality regulations. One advancement in internet in particular is 5G. 5G is the method of autonomous vehicle, robots, and drone communications.
