Even though students have been taking standardized test for decades, parents and educators are just now realizing that standardized testing could be harmful to students. Standardized testing has been a problem , causing controversy since the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Although standardized testing helps pinpoint weak spots and evaluate students progress, it can cause students to have mental health issues. Stress has been a top leading issue students have to face from standardized test for the past few years. Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.
After analyzing the three interviews I conducted, each interviewee had different thoughts and applications to standardized tests. I want to start off by stating what each of my participants believes about standardized tests. Sara stated that “too much time is spent on studying for these tests” (interviewee #1, 1). She also said that as a teacher she wanted her “students to LOVE history, sometimes I feel that that got lost in the desire to have them all pass” (interviewee #1,1). Mary’s opinion read, “I don’t think that it is fair because a simple test shouldn’t judge your whole intelligence” (interviewee #2, 2).
Austin Bullington, a student who is severely dyslexic and mildly dysgraphic, tells the story of how a single standardized test had the ability to derail his dreams. In an interview, Austin stated that his aspiration has always been to teach music, but before he could take the classes he needed to earn his degree, he had to pass a standardized test for teaching; a test that was supposed to indicate his ability to perform in college. Austin graduated high school with a 3.72 GPA and was in the top twenty-five percent of his class. He was even doing very well in college, too, but this single score did not allow him to pursue the career he had always wanted (Bullington). Do standardized tests actually help a students knowledge? Should we actually take them in school? Some people support standardized tests and others don’t. I personally think we should not take standardized in school because they don’t measure a whole person’s abilities, they are performed poorly by they US, and they don’t measure a teachers abilities well.
According to the data developed from the ECLS, the more important factor in determining a child’s success on a standardized test is what a parent is. In my opinion, this does not mean that all parents who try to make education first fail. It means that parents who are more educated or have more resources are able to give their children. I believe this is a strange conclusion because what a parent is reflects what a parent does usually. This chapter discusses how a child’s environment is not a direct correlation to their success.

Standardized testing is when test takers take a test that gives an overall score on the subject you are learning about, on one particular day. Students and teachers throughout the year are stressed out teaching by the book or as a student, taking everything in and getting tested at the end. The test does not take in count what they really do know externally.
Does standardize testing really give an accurate view of a student’s learning or ability? If you’re really thinking hard on that one, the answer is an obvious no.” No you say” will let me explain why I say no to standardize test. Standardize testing is such a basic thing that it doesn’t take into account that we forgot not everyone is the same or learns the same. Some people are absolutely terrible at test but great in class.

Our education system isn’t doing so well. Thousands of students drop out of high school every day. America’s students continue to perform poorly on standardized tests in comparison to the students of other countries across the globe. As our education system has noticeably begun failing our students, many people have put the blame squarely on teachers. On both state and national levels, the Government has begun blaming teachers by holding them accountable to unreasonable testing and grade metrics despite the fact that there are numerous other problems that exist.

In recent years, students have taken these standardized tests in school and many have taken nearly each one listed above. These tests are designed for the purpose of checking students’ growth and knowledge of core subjects like reading, math, english, science, and writing. While this may sound beneficial and look like a good idea on paper, the truth is the assessments are flawed for multiple reasons.
