Tony Gwynn once said, “Steroids do not guarantee you’re going to have success. I think a lot of people think that they will, but they don’t.” (Tony). Everyone is not necessarily informed on exactly what steroids do to people. A lot of people think that all they do is make people strong. Steroid use can be very harmful too. Most of the general public is not informed on the positives of steroid use, the negatives of steroid use, and if it is better to use oral or injected steroids. There are actually some “pros” that go with using anabolic steroids. Some people use them as a way to lose weight in a short amount of time. The most complaints about using steroids are that the people that use them for weightlifting do not keep their results for long (Long Term). The biggest problem with anabolic steroid use is cancer. People are getting cancer more and more every year especially in the United States. Another downside of steroids is that they cause mental highs and lows. People get really aggressive and out of control sometimes on steroids, and then as soon as the aggressiveness effect wears off, they have an opposite effect. This effect makes most people very depressed and drowsy. All of these mood swings can happen in as short as ten minutes. People can also have insomnia when they take steroids. This is when the people who took the steroids are not able to sleep at night. Steroids will cause a person to not think clearly. When steroids are fresh in the body’s system, it makes people have a lack of good judgment and cause irrational and irresponsible decision making. If steroids are used for an extended period of time, then the loss of hair, also known as alopecia, becomes a factor. The dihydrotestosterone, often known as “DHT”, is the cause of hair loss. HIV also becomes a factor when it comes to using steroids and “dirty” needles (Side Effects). Since HIV is a factor, a lot of people use oral steroids instead of injected steroids.
