I love living in my home country, the United States. I find it to be a welcoming country where I can pursue my passions and live a life of pure happiness. However, as I have grown older, I have started to see an aspect of the home I find troubling and toxic. The more I expose myself to politics, the more I see of a dangerous side of America: an America that is angry with anyone different from itself. Every day I see intolerance of other people on the news and in my daily life. I see people unwilling to accept any opinion other than their own. I see people angry with a person they do not know and who is only hated due to stereotypes placed upon them. I see my worst nightmare in my beloved country when we discuss about Syrian refugees. Of course, the first question that pops up when considering Syrian refugees is simple: why are these people fleeing their country? Bringing diversity into school has a plethora of benefits. Children in diverse schools can have more opportunities to talk with kids of other backgrounds, allowing for a higher sense of commonality and perspective (Wasatch). Kids in more diverse schools were found to have “higher social self-confidence, higher educational satisfaction, and an increased sense of social responsibility and increased participation in community service endeavors” (Wasatch). Allowing Syrian refugees’ children as well into communities to partake in our education system would greatly benefit our kids. These refugees would enable kids to construct a sense of community with people different from themselves, producing a much safer world in which many more people were not afraid of someone due to background, ethnicity, or
