o Would it be useful to identify the core issue of the risk being addressed? In the month of July, 4 teams noted inability to safely evacuate from the home. Although this is risk, it is unclear why. If teams were to implement the 5 why’s, could they drill down to the core issue. For example, if the inability to evacuate was due to mobility, could we identify DME to mitigate that risk.
UNSAFE PRODUCTS Even though corporations do not wish to cause harm to consumers, they have in fact all too often done so when the drive to maximize profit or survive in the marketplace has taken priority over concern for consumer safety. An massive range of consumer products including many foods, drugs and medical devices, vehicles, domestic products, and cosmetics have been acknowledged as dangerous to various degrees. Around 70,000 Americans are suspected to die yearly from product-related accidents, and millions more suffer incapacitating injuries at a cost of over $100 billion in property damage, lost wages insurance, litigation, and medical expenses. Even though certain products are intrinsically dangerous, much evidence suggests that corporations, in their almost single-minded pursuit of profit, have been negligent- sometimes criminally- in their disregard for consumer safety.
Gregg Easterbrook, a fellow of the Brookings Institution and author of The Progress Paradox, argues in his article “Road Kill,” that people in the United States are not paying attention to a major killer: our roads. In his essay, Easterbrook explains the lack of attention to the threat of road accidents, even comparing it to 9/11, which has become a serious threat to Americans on the road, and even worldwide. Many Americans dismiss the problem, even though it is huge even if it is not perceived as a huge threat like terrorism. Some causes of the rise in accident casualties proposed by Easterbrook are distracted driving and the rapid increase of horsepower. Easterbrook proposes multiple solutions to the problem, such as increased legislation on distracted driving and reducing horsepower in cars (A1-4).
Shawntae Aikens Technology has a found a way into our lives where we use it everyday, and some have come to the point where they depend on it. People have become concerned that the Internet is becoming a distraction and has taken over our lives. The Internet, and social media has become very addicting our smartphones have given us the chance to have the internet and social media at our hands at all times. Nicholas Carr, a writer for the Atlantic Online, wrote the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Within his article he discusses his opinion on how the internet is something that is not helping us at all.
The ease of texting is so great, so why would we ever have an honest conversation again? The use of text messages replaces face-to-face conversation. Thus demonstrating technology is replacing "humanity." This idea feeds into a broader concept that the vast media that allows us to consume information easily alters our perception and social engagement. This further contributes to many people's decrease in attention spans due to the availability and consumption of information.
Even though it is for protective purposes, people are unaware of the potential threats and dangers that they are putting their loved ones and themselves
“Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master” (Christian Louis Lance). In a short story called “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, technology is thought to be a friend, but is revealed as an enemy. The story shows us the true power of technology is destroying humans ability to connect, producing screen addictions, and is taking a toll on teens mental health. Technology is destroying humans' ability to connect. For instance, in the short story “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury, the author predicted how technology will ruin humans ability to connect because of their dependence on technology.
Nicholas Carr, What the Internet is doing to Our Brains The Shallows (2010) asserts that, “The price we pay to assume technology’s power is alienation.” He supports this assertion by saying, “They both ultimately achieve their mental and behavioral effects by shaping the synaptic organization of the brain.” Also by, “ We long to keep it activated.” The writer concludes in order for people to improve their thoughts, they will have to cope with the new technology and how they think. Carr believes that technology is taking over how people interact with each other.
Harley Phelps T. Nelson ENGL 1013(006) 30 April 2015 Adverse Affects of Technology Technology, by its definition is to be used to advance society and help move society in a forward direction. Though society does see many of the benefits of using technology, but such benefits are often outweighed when society abuses these tools. Social media and television, specifically, have become more disadvantageous because of such abuse. Both social media and television have had an adverse effect on society by demoting social activism, crippling face-to-face interaction, and inhibiting common skills due to the mass amount of time spent on such technologies. It is through technology that society has been able to grow into what it is today.
Too much screen use induces less communication between people and more time spent using technology. Technology used in our society in the same way. Sometimes people use television to forget about a hard time at work, others using phones in public, so they don’t have to interact with other people. “Little by little, technology has become an integral part of the way that people communicate with one another and has increasingly taken the place of face-to-face communication. Due to the rapid expansion of technology, many individuals fear that people may be too immersed in this digital world and not present enough in the real world,”.
Sean Hampton said “Victory is the child of preparation and determination.” My first year of attending Thomson Middle School I was determined to play, no matter how much I had to work I was determined. The coaches had a meeting were they informed us on a few rules. One was that you had to be in the seventh and eighth grade to participate. A pile of disappointment tumbled into the bottom of my stomach because I was only in the sixth grade.
The author also illustrates the image of technology that how people are using without interacting each other. I agree with the author’s point that technology has a huge impact on our
In conclusion, technology can have negative impacts on today’s people in many ways. It is harmful to people’s well-being, makes people lose physical connections with those around them, and it makes students disregard their work. Technology is everywhere in today’s society. These devices can be so harmful to people without them even knowing it. People should be more aware of what technology can do, and try their best not to depend on
Being overly connected can cause psychological issues such as distraction, narcissism, expectation of instant gratification, and even depression. Beside [sic] affecting users ' mental health, use of technology can also have negative repercussions on physical health causing vision problems, hearing loss, and neck strain.” Sultan lists numerous effects, but there are even more negative effects that technology causes. In today’s society, the use of technology is becoming more socially accepted.
Many people can agree that the introduction of technology into society has impacted humans a lot. Kids are using cell phones, computers are used in schools. Technology is everywhere in people’s lives. But the true question is whether or not technology is ruining people. Starting from the fact that kids are getting less and less physical activity due to technology, technology also ruins social skills in people, and the fact that technology is very dangerous, technology is ruining people.
