(a) One factor that determined the outcome of the 1896 election was the fact Cleveland industrialist named Marcus Alonzo Hanna was determined to see McKinley, Republican Candidate, elected; “I love McKinley,” He once said. The Republican platform cleverly straddled the money question but leaned toward hard-money policies. He believed that the free coinage of silver would bring financial ruin to America, in which William J. Bryan’s, Democratic Candidate, “Cross of Gold” speech demanded inflation through the unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 ounces of silver to 1 of gold, through the market ratio was about 32 to 1. Free silver became almost as much a religious as a financial issue. Using his vast wealth and power, Hanna directed
The 1912 Election and the Power of Progressivism: A Brief History with Documents by Brett Flehinger is about the four Presidential candidates during the election of 1912, their political parties and campaigns. The book shows how opposed each candidate 's platform was and which problems the candidates agreed on. The book has documents from this time to further aid in understanding what exactly was happening. None of the candidates, however, were as different as Theodore Roosevelt and his predecessor, William Howard Taft. Their platforms and ideas regarding trusts, direct democracy and courts and the constitution differed greatly, whilst they agreed on the important issue of women 's suffrage.
The War of 1812 was in itself a catalyst for the shift in the political dynamics of the Democratic-Republicans and the Federalist Party. The trade restrictions that were the British Orders in Council and French Continental System not only challenged America’s neutrality stance but also the political parties’ economic and military stances in order to align with their overarching self-interests. The war waged by Madison against the British was welcomed by Democratic-Republicans concentrated in the South and West, and rejected by the dying Federalists in New England. Formerly against a large military and advocates of a peaceful and neutral foreign policy, the Democratic-Republicans became the ones campaigning for war whereas Anglophile Federalists
In 1912 for the first time a third political party acquired greater amount of the Electoral Vote over a popular political party. The Progressive party compares to the third parties of today by simply not being one of the two traditional political parties, played a major role in the election of 1912, and by nor yet being victorious in Presidential election. The Progressive party progressed further than other third parties due to the fact the party was run by Theodore Roosevelt, a previous President of the United States, and his predecessor William Taft pushing against his political agenda which angered the Republican Progressors and former POTUS Roosevelt thus sparked the beginning of the Progressive party.

Willkie of Indiana, FDR seemed strong even though he only campaigned from the White House.
However, Taft led the Republican Party at a time when it was split and did so in a successful manner. Following the election of 1908 there was a widespread of conflicting beliefs, particularly within the Republican Party, regarding the seemingly opposite beliefs between former president Theodore Roosevelt and Taft. Both Roosevelt and Taft were “progressives”, a political philosophy based on the idea that the advancement of science, technology and a strong economy were vital for the advancement of the country and for humans as a whole. Despite these similar beliefs, their were still conflicting political beliefs surrounding the two. During the election of 1908 president, Taft appointed Frank Hitchcock, who will later be appointed by Taft as the Postmaster General, as the chairman for the Republican National Committee.
Problems faced in the 1796 and 1800 presidential elections involving the original procedure electing the the president and vice president prompted the creation and passing of the Twelfth Amendment, which requires electors of the electoral college to cast one vote for president and one for vice president. Prior to the amendment’s passage, the electors were unable to indicate which of their two votes was for the president and which was for vice president. Electors did not even necessarily have to cast two votes. It was also not permitted for an elector to vote for two people that came from the same state as that elector. This rule was designed so that electors would not purposefully vote for candidates simply because they were
The turmoil, upheaval, and controversy of the 2016 Trump election is a significant current event of the modern world, but this landslide election is not the first in America’s history to raise such conflicting opinions. The Revolution of 1800 was another shift in political history that impacted not only the candidates, but majority of the public. The defeat of John Adams to Vice President Thomas Jefferson led to the rise of the Democratic-Republican Party rule and the eventual demise of the Federalist Party. Often in politics, opposing views, scandals, and negative publicity plays a role in the election process, due to this, in both the 2016 election and 1800 election negative criticism from both parties was evident. Both the Democrats and Whigs wanted to expand the numbers of voters. They accomplished this by eliminating several voting restrictions put on white males. Like the Federalist the Whigs supported northern merchants. Besides supporting merchants, the only thing members of the Whig party really had in common was there opposition to the Democratic party.
The year was 1974 and President Richard Nixon found himself in the middle of what is best known as the water gate scandal. What exactly happened and how big of a role Nixon played is still up for debate to this day. One thing that had come to light was that accusations began that President Nixon used campaign money to take part in the scandal. Shortly after his resignation from office the Federal Elections Campaign Act was amended by congress so that greater limits were set on campaign spending. When I returned, I was displeased that my former Vice President and current President William Taft was doing things that went against my anti-trust policies. Because of this, I decided to split off from the Republican party and form my own political party. This party was known as the Progressive Party, colloquially known as the Bull-Moose Party. While campaigning for the 1912 election, I was shot in the chest. Luckily, my folded up speech protected me from any fatal injuries and I went on to deliver my speech.
As an encouragement to vote most of us have probably been told, “every vote counts” at some point in our lives. In reality, this is not true in presidential elections due to the Electoral College and what it does. The Electoral College has flaws in it that can prohibit the outcome of the election from accurately reflecting whom a majority the people of the country cast their vote for. Not only will he abolishment of the electoral college change the outcome of elections, it can change the whole campaign process and the way some people in less represented states feel about voting increasing voter turnout.
