Every american citizen is granted a chance to attend school from kindergarten to twelfth grade for free. John Locke would agree with this because he believed that everyone was born with a blank mind, and that blank mind should be educated. The system enables children to have an education and to advance further in life with the knowledge necessary. For giving everyone that opportunity this system should be praised, but in the system it also has many flaws. The American education system is failing its citizens and the government is doing nothing about it. School should not cause stress, it should be a place where people want to go to have fun and learn. Trying to get eight hours of sleep while trying to do homework and practicing; the two do not fit together. Richard Sherman, a professional football player, has graduated from Stanford with honors and earning a degree in communication understands the difficulty with a student athlete's time management. “Most of these kids are done with class by 3 o'clock and you have the rest of the day to do what you please," Sherman says. "You may spend it studying and then you may go have coffee with friends… As a student-athlete, you don't have that kind of time. You wake up in the morning and have weights. Then you go to class. Then you might get a bite to eat, then you go to meetings and then you have practice. And you have to try to get all your school work done." Schools are suppressing children by forcing them into a compliance-based model of education. All children are natural learners. Children are born with curiosity, creativity, wonder, and intrinsic motivation. Research shows that with more years of formal schooling, those very qualities are stunted tremendously. Moreover, schools largely resemble prisons: children are cut from society and social media is banned. Many people have the issue of being bored in class and not having a “thrilling” education which is saddening. Students do not have the desire to go to school because it is not interesting. School is filled with lectures, tests, and homework which is not ideal to the natural curious and adventurous teenager. Adam Smith would think that this is morally wrong. Smith wants education to be fun so people could learn and pursue their dreams with the education necessary.
