Due to being tired of their negotiations with the U.S., on December 7, 1941, Japan dropped a surprise attack on the United States, in Pearl Harbor. Having been at war with Japan for quite a long time, president Truman, converged scientists to come up with the atomic bombs. The creation of the nuclear weapons was kept a secret: this was called the Manhattan Project. The project consisted of making two atomic bombs. Each of the explosives had names Fat Man, and Little Boy. President Truman did not live to see the Manhattan Project finished, but the next president, F.D.R., did. This is important, because first of all, it wasn't fair to kill many people who never did anything wrong. The casualties were either crushed to death under broken down buildings, or were too close to where the atomic bomb struct, which the heat rays just disintegrated people, leaving nothing but their shadows on the ground(Dietrich). Others didn't die right away, they walked distances away from the scene then just collapses. Some began to vomit and have bloody diarrhea, along with being extremely weak. Majority with those symptoms died a week or two after the bomb went off(After the bomb). Second reason why the bombs shouldn't have been dropped is because, by killing many people, it left children and elders orphaned.. This event caused a breakdown in families. Children and elders were put into two groups. Children were called "A-Bomb Orphans" and elders were called "The Orphaned Elders”( Listwa). When the bomb was dropped not only did the radiation ruin people's lives, but ruined the land. This meant the soil was contaminated and wouldn't allow crops to grow, and if it did it wasn't safe to eat. So due to the scarcity of food many orphans faced death because of starvation. As for orphans getting treated in hospitals, they were allowed only a minimum of two months of treatment due to a law that was passed. "The majority of patients needing emergency care was housed temporarily in schools, but they had to be evacuated as children returned from outlying areas and needed to enroll.” Children were scared, crying out for their parents only to get no response.
