opportunity to earn a living, once released (Cullen & Jonson 2012). The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), in 2016 began programming aimed to reduce recidivism, noting that the offender’s plan for reentry starts at reception (U.S. Department of Justice, n.d.). The BOP has indicated that they will utilize education, vocational, and cognitive therapy to lessen offender’s criminality (U.S. Department of Justice, n.d.). With recidivism, as high as 75% in many states and as low as 20% in a few, the most significant indicator for recidivism is the economy (Hall, Harger, & Stansel, 2015). Additionally, the ability to work may be an indicator of stability and inmate programs assist in offenders’ ability to get and keep employment by reducing criminality …show more content…
EBP utilizes known effective interventions with quantifiable proficient workers based on offender need. EBP can be used for offenders’ assessments, programs, and supervision or sentencing strategies. Best practice of EBP includes policy formation, monitoring and evaluating interventions to measure effectiveness. Most importantly EBP will ensure processes are measured, controlled and trackable for the most effective outcomes (Serin, 2006). Idealistically, the results whether successful or not will be found empirically demonstrated so that resources will be spent providing advantageous solutions. It is also important to consider that for programs to be efficient they must have facility support and be measured and objectified. In specific areas, programs can be viewed as undermining punishment and offenders not getting what they deserve, despite the current trend of high recidivism rates (Lerman & Page,2006). Additionally, the correctional staff is capable of influencing programs whereby their political and personal views can influence prison environments and conveyance of programs (Lerman & Page,2006). Referring to assessments that demonstrate the use of criteria and not individual judgment, may be more effective and transparent. Not only would effectiveness be improved, but the ability for processes to be transportable between areas would also enhance costs and outcomes. Tracking the results of programs will depend on standardized offender interventions. Ensuring programs meet the specific criteria of EBP, will help develop consistent
