It reads, "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Americans wanting to protect an individual’s right to own guns relies on the ‘right to bear arms’ portion of the Second Amendment, while those working to reduce the number of gun related deaths in the US by regulating gun ownership are concerned with the ‘well-regulated militia’ portion.
