The Three Gorge Dam project started in 1994 and was completed in 2003, becoming the largest hydroelectric dam in the world.Creating a total of 18,000 megawatts of power, that’s eight times stronger that the Hoover Dam in the Colorado River. The $25 billion project help the Chinese Government accomplish major goals like flood control, power generation and tourism. The Three Gorge Dam has been one of the biggest reason why today the Yangtze river has become polluted. The Yangtze River is the primarily drinking source in China. Test run in the water proved scientist that their was a 73% increased in the pollution level over the last 50 years. They say that the discharge of sewage has reached to about 25 billion tons, 42% is the country’s and 45% comes from the industry discharge. Know that the water has been polluted the plant and creatures that habitat the Yangtze River are in danger of extinction. For example the Yangtze Dolphin or also know as Baiji Dolphin, 2002 scientist made themselves the idea that this magnificent creature was extinct.
