I personally have to agree with the Norwegians and Japanese position. Hunting whales for food and to increase their economy has been part of their culture and way of life for decades. “The whales these 2 countries were hunting are not considered endangered, so in their views, the prohibition on hunting them was not based on environmental reasons”. (Culture and Globalization, page 21) These 2 countries hunt these whales because it’s an integral part of their economy. They are not damaging the environment, so it seems to me, America is trying to throw around its power. Just as they did in with Mexico and the issues ‘it wasn’t doing’ to save dolphins. I do believe the whaling ban is a violation of a nation’s sovereignty. The whaling ban shouldn’t be placed onto specific nations. For example: if say killer whales are in the ‘endangered’ category, then there should be a ban on hunting and fishing killer whales. But this shouldn’t pertain to all whales. Norwegian and Japanese governments should still be able to hunt and fish sperm whales or even blue whales. The ban should be on specific species of whales, not the population as a whole. A cultural activity is one that boosts a country's economy, appeases a country's’ citizens, and helps facilitate differences from one country to the next. For example, the United States has ‘President’s Day’. “This holiday was created to celebrate all President’s, past and present.” (President’s Day, n.d.) A second example would be the Chinese New Year. “To celebrate a year of hard work, have a good rest, and relax with family”. (Chinese New Year 2016, n.d.) China does not celebrate President’s Day nor does the U.S. celebrate the Chinese New Year. These are cultural specific to these
