Unbelievably Bad Idea Universal basic income has been a topic for discussion for a while. It has become a possible future in this world that is becoming automated. Universal basic income (UBI) is essentially welfare that is given to everyone. You do not have to be looking for work or show the willingness to work. UBI has both it’s ups and downs, but I believe that we should not have it. The downside of UBI outweighs the positives. The main positive of UBI is that no one will be extremely poor, it will sustain people enough to keep them above the poverty line. Everyone will be able to afford things like food, clothing, and a roof over their head. Another pro is that it will give workers more power. The central downside, is the economy. Giving every single citizen enough money to support them enough to not have to work, will cost trillions and trillions of dollars. America is already in debt by about 20 trillion, we simply cannot afford to just give a couple trillion of dollars to people. On top of that, the american dollar will go down crazily and then inflation will sky rocket. If everyone is able to buy things, the prices will just go up until people can not afford them. The american dollar will lose all worth until the entire economy crashes. Furthermore, how will the government get any money if they have no one to tax. What will they do, tax their own government owned factories? Secondly, UBI will create lazy people that do not want to work. If the government will give you enough money to have a good life, why should you spend your time at a job when you could just be relaxing and having fun. Also, since no one would want to work human progress will plateau. We will have robots that do everything for us that we need at that moment. There will be no creativity, and no new inventions to improve human life. Finally, people could still use the money that the government gives them on bad things. People will still be able to buy alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, and even things off of the black market. Additionally, they could send that money to other countries damaging the economy even
