Throughout history, war has been waged across the globe by almost every country. War has brought many positives and negatives to the United States and the world as a whole. But for the United States, war has brought peace, stability, and freedom. War may not be an ideal solution to solve problems, but it can one of the only ways to achieve peace and restore the feeling of safety into people. Everyone likes the feeling of safety, but during war time, that feeling can be very hard to find. But, in the United States many people have the feeling of safety during war because we have a strong military, we have intimidated others with wars-past, and we know that war has brought peace. Americans feel they have an edge over those who threaten their feelings of safety during war because of victories the United States has accomplished in wars past. In Schakes article, it is stated, “In all of the major indices of power -- economic, military, and political strength -- the United States weighs in the heaviest”(Schake 1). With all this power in the U.S. it is easy to see how some countries can be intimidated. The U.S.’s history can also bring along the feelings of nervousness among other countries. Ever since America was founded, there has never been a war fought on American soil since the Revolutionary War. Meaning that other countries are so intimidated by the United States’s power. To me, this just shows how strong we are as a country and what other countries see when they look at us. In the Star Spangled Banner it states, “The Land of the Free, and the Home of the Brave”(Shadle 40). When talking of the Star Spangled Banner many Americans know the toon. It is a symbol for our country and we all know the toon and what it stands for. Whenever the Star Spangled Banner is played it instills a feeling of pride and safety knowing that we are in a safe place. With all the dangers in the world it is hard to have the feeling of safety be a constant in on minds, but the sound of the Star Spangled Banner reassures many that everything is ok. For those in the military it is hard for them to make sacrifices and things they do may not seem just, but they are. Men that are fighting are responsible for pulling the trigger, but also responsible for the fate of the country. Trying to protect the country so that everyone feels safe, although the man will always feel responsibility for killing another human being. That doesn’t take away from the fact that they are fighting for their county and making the country feel safe. In O’Brien’s short story he states, “Sometimes I forgive myself, other times I don’t”(O’Brien 813). By saying he sometimes forgives himself and other times he doesn’t shows a lot of how war can mess with your mind. It can be very tough on
