We are introduced to the author of the book, Bryan Stevenson who is a member of the bar in two states Alabama and Georgia. He then receives a call from the local Judge Robert E. Lee about a case which involves a man called Walter McMillian’s. He knew that he could have gotten into great danger but he decides to do the right thing and confront the case. In the county of Monroe an eighteen-year-old woman is brutally murdered. The murder took everyone by surprise and even after a few days of investigating no one could find concrete evidence to point out who was the killer.
( Armitage, page 7). In simpler terms, Moriwaki’s has a great lack of emotions and has been labeled a “psychopath”. A psychopath is defined as a person that suffers from a chronic medical disorder and has a violent or abnormal behavior. Psychopathic traits are often associated with criminal behavior. With this in mind, Moriwaki’s lack of emotions and psychopathic personality has lead to the murder of Kurose.
In August 2008, Richard Davis, of Independence, Missouri, was convicted in the kidnapping, rape, and torture of Michelle Huff-Ricci and the kidnapping, rape, and first-degree murder of Marsha Spicer (Rice, 2012). One might be quick to assume that Davis is deranged and that no further explanation can be given. However, Sigmund Freud’s Psychopathy Theory may provide an explanation, though not an excuse, for Davis’s actions.

One of them, Arnold Friend although at first appearing friendly, is nothing more than a malicious predator, similar in kind to The Misfit, who greets his victims in a much more sinister way. The two characters, when stood side by side, almost seemed as they become one, yet are polar opposites. When one compares the character Arnold Friend to that of The Misfit, more similarities come forward than differences.
Scott Peterson was convicted of the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner Peterson. He has been on death row for over a decade as he tries to get his conviction appealed. Peterson and his family maintain his innocence, even participating in a docu-series titled, The Murder of Laci Peterson. This has caused quite a stir among viewers who now say they have doubts about his guilt. Could Scott Peterson been wrongfully imprisoned for so long because of circumstances he had no control over?
A psychopath is classified as someone who shows no remorse and has no conscience, while a sociopath has some sort of conscience and sometimes shows some guilt or remorse ("What's the Difference Between a Sociopath and a Psychopath"). Psychopaths do not feel sorry for other people (“What’s the Difference Between a Sociopath and a Psychopath”) and Kuklinski certainly did not feel sorry for any of his victims (“Married to The Iceman”). During an interview with HBO, Kuklinski stated that he probably could have killed his father and wouldn’t have felt bad about it ("Richard Kuklinski The Iceman Mafia Hitman HBO Interview 2001 (Part 1)"). Richard Kuklinski also showed sociopathic traits. He only showed remorse when talking about his wife and kids ("Richard Kuklinski 'The Iceman' Part 12 of 12").
Murder can be defined as “the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another”. How then, are others able to make us sympathize with not only murderers, but people who have committed horrendous crimes? For example, the media is constantly attempting to humanize rapists and even terrorists with phrases like “lone wolf” or “alienated and adrift.” Such phrases make some of us want to pity the criminal. This can be seen when we compare Perry Smith and Dick Hickock from Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood.

Psychopath and sociopath are two terms classified as antisocial personality disorders in the world of psychology. Although many people have heard of these two terms, quite often people do not know what sets them apart from one another. A sociopath is defined as a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience. The definition of psychopath is similar in being a person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior. By looking at the definitions, these personality disorders appear very similar; however, there are specific attributes that are more specific to one of the two.
In particular the name that comes up is H.H. Holmes, a notorious serial killer who murdered countless young women during the time of the fair, and could be sourced as a downfall in society. Yet, the actions of one man can not be the portrayal of numerous good deeds and positive advancements for the majority of the citizens. There are sick minded people throughout all points in history, and from the eventual arrest and interrogation of Holmes, we as a culture gained insight to the psyche of a deranged man: “...the vague humanness was missing... The concept of psychopaths and sociopaths in Western society and culture is not clearly defined, and covers a great range of character, attitudes and behaviour. This range includes everything from someone who is introverted and not socially adept to mass murderers and cannibals. Characters of psychopaths in early films were often created without a real understanding of psychopathic personalities. They were often portrayed as caricatures, being emotionally unstable, sadistic, sexually compulsive and with an urge to engage in random violence, murders, and destruction. This was often accompanied by bizarre mannerisms, such as giggling, laughing, or facial tics, often creating famous but unreal characters.

They are skilled at faking affection, are irresponsible, impulsive, tolerate little frustration and they pursue immediate gratification.
