The Pull of the Tide The small boy reached up to the slick handle of his dad's office and crept inside, secretly hoping that one of his parents would notice this rebellious action. Both his father and mother had forbidden him from ever entering the room, which guaranteed his entrance whenever the door was unlocked. It was a big room with a large wooden desk and florid antique wallpaper. He could still clearly remember the day that his father had bought the desk from the antique store. Never had he seen his Dad so excited. The desk, however was not what drew him into the room; it was the large black swivel chair. She had considered becoming part-time in her law practice, but Joe had convinced her that by doing this she would be sacrificing her career, something she was not willing to do. Clonking down the stairs, she searched for him."Essai, are you all right?" she called. There was only silence. "Essai." It was strange for him not to respond immediately, as he always seemed to be seeking attention. Confused she paced around the house, checking the kitchen, his room, and any other place that he might be hiding. "Essai, this isn't funny." It was at that point she noticed the carelessly cracked door to Joe's office, a sloppy mistake that he would not have made. She crept inside, hoping to find Essai. Scanning the room skeptically, she searched for her son. All she found was his muddy footprints tracking up to the desk. A thought hit her- the gun. Was the gun still in the drawer? When Joe had initially suggested getting a gun she had been opposed, afraid that Essai would find it. Joe had of course assured that the gun would remain a secret, and she reluctantly had agreed, under the condition that they would never speak of the gun to Essai, and that he would find a safe place to hide
