Foremost, the epic hero Beowulf had formidable strength and used high-powered weapons in his battles which led him to be victorious time after time. The epic hero characteristic that this exemplifies is, the hero is often a demi-god, possesses distinctive weapons of great size and power, often presents from the gods. Throughout the poem Beowulf, it is exhibited that Beowulf is a veracious hero. For starters, when Beowulf was first introduced into the story it was conveyed that he had substantial strength. In the poem, it states, “Follower and the strongest of the Geats-greater/ And stronger than anyone anywhere in this world-”(lines 110-111) This embodies Beowulf’s attributes of a demi-god. As the appointed king, Beowulf has the responsibility to keep his land in order. When a dragon stole from the Geats, Beowulf set off on his last victory. In the poem it reveals, “No one else can do/ What I mean to, here, no man but me/ Could hope to defeat this monster. No one/ Could try.” (683-685) This delivers that the battle against the monster would be something only Beowulf would attempt. For starters, Beowulf’s strength was instantly realized by Grendel. Beowulf grabbed onto Grendel as he was going through Herot and killing people. Immediately at Beowulf’s first touch, fear shook through Grendel’s body. In the poem, it states, “Knew at once that nowhere on earth, Had he met a man whose hands were harder;”(433-434) This exemplifies the vigor Beowulf possessed by being able to frighten the evil monster.
