Poe once said “Lord help my poor soul” The words of this author portray that he has gone through many hard things throughout his life and has influenced and shaped the author's writing. Edgar Allan Poe has had a very hard life due to the losses of many of his loved ones. This reflects his work because he expresses his emotions throughout his poems. Due to the fact that he has lost his loved ones, the author begins to feel alone and abandoned. Feeling alone and abandoned have been a recurring theme throughout Edgar Allan Poe's work especially “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee”. This has influenced his work especially in “The Raven”. In the poem it states “Ah, distinctly i remember it was in the bleak december, wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished for the morrow:- vainly I had sought to borrow from my books surcease of sorrow-sorrow for the lost Lenore for the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.”(Poe, paragraph 2). This is significant because he is remembering the loss of his loved one Lenore and Poe is using the sorrow he has from the loss of Lenore and shows his emotions throughout the poem. The author acknowledges that “The Raven” is a poem of despair and suffering. In the article it states “Charles Baudelaire noted in his introduction to the French edition of “The Raven”: It is indeed he poem of the sleeplessness of despair; it lacks nothing: neither the fever of ideas, nor the violence of colors,nor sickly reasoning,nor driveling terror, nor even the bizarre gaiety of suffering which makes it more terrible” Poe also wrote poems that were intended to be read aloud. Experimenting with comenations of sound and rhythm, he employed such technical devices as repetition,parallelism, internal rhyme, alliteration, and assonance to produce works that are unique in American poetry for their haunting, musical quality” (page 2). In the poem Annabel lee it states “ For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams of the beautiful Annabel Lee: and the stars never rise, but i feel the bright eyes of the beautiful Annabel Lee and so, all the night tide i lie down by the side of my darling- my darling - my life ad my bride, in her sepulcher thee by the sea in her tomb by the surrounding sea,” This is significant because it shows Poe expressing his strong love for Annabel Lee and expresses how he mourns her death.
