In the poems ‘The Raven’ and ‘Annabel Lee’ they share the same subject. The subject of these two poems is that a man, the narrator and the women he loves in both stories have died or end up dying in the story. This creates a sad and lonely feel to both stories. These lines from ‘The Raven’ are about the loss of the narrator's love, Lenore”From my books surcease of sorrow/ sorrow for the lost Lenore”(10-11). In ‘Annabel Lee’ the narrator loses the one he loved ”That the wind came out of the cloud by night/ Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.”(30-31). In lines 5-6 Poe shows his love for Annabel Lee.”And this maiden she lived with no other thought/ Than to love and be loved by me.m (5-6)
The structure varies between the two poems. In the poem ‘Annabel Lee’ the lines and stanzas throughout the entire poem are shorter and more direct with information, figurative language, and imagery.”It was many and many a year ago/ In a kingdom by the sea”(1-2) are short but “That a maiden there lived whom you may know”(3) was a longer line than the others. He uses metaphors, allusions, and similes. One use of imagery in ‘The Raven” is “Once upon a midnight dreary…”(1). “To the fowl whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom’s core”(74) is an example of a metaphor. These help with the understanding of what is trying to be conveyed to the reader. In ‘Annabel Lee” the Figurative language does not stand out as much because of the different format and structure of the poem. The lines and stanzas are shorter that in ‘The Raven’. Poe uses repetition,”she was a child and i was a child”(7) and hyperboles,”With a love that winged seraphs of heaven/ coveted her me”(11-12). The use of figurative language in these two poems give them mood and feeling when
