Rascoe 1 Aden Rascoe English 1302 Professor Amo March 27, 2023 The Raven The use of literary devices are in place in writing, especially in poetry, to allow the reader to develop a better understanding of the story line. In Edgar Allan Poe’s writing he includes several different forms of figurative language to develop his writings, specifically in The Raven he uses the figurative device imagery to understand the depth of the distress of the main character at the loss of his loved one Lenore. Poe uses literary devices such as Alliterations, Personifications, and Metaphors to form his poem, but the Imagery had the most influence on the story due to it impacting the overall tone of the story. To start with, one phrase of imagery that stood out to me stated, “And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain thrilled me”(Poe,Stanza 3). This phrase combines the effect of describing the emotions of the unknown character as silken and sad, while portraying his grief as uncertain rustling of the curtains thrilling him. Without imagery the storyline would come out bland and readers would not be able to fully grasp the plot as well as the tone. Throughout several different poems, there has been a common occurrence of plot and tone to develop the writing. In order to successfully progress each poem to achieve the goal there is a need to have a few stepping stones. These stepping stones consist of including figurative language such as imagery which allow a reader to be able to comprehend the tone of the story which then develops the plot.
