Research Paper: Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was an american writer, critic and poet who is well known for his literature. Poe was born in Boston, massachusetts on january 19, 1809 to both parents Eliza poe and David Poe jr. Both of his parents were traveling actors but still very poor and didn’t make much money. Then eventually when Poe turned 2 his dad left the family and then on december 08, 1811 his mom died, and not to long after that his dad died to. Then he was moved in with his adopted parents John and frances Allan. While with them he got a good education and then wrote his first collection of poems “ Tamerlane and other poems”. Even though the music of the poem set a tone of fear into people reading it. The critic Elizabeth Browning says this “ Your ‘raven’ has produced a sensation a ‘fit horror,’ here in england. Some of my friends are taken by the fear of it and some by the music.” I agree with this cause the tone of the story causes some fear in you. At the end of stanzas the raven repeats nevermore to the narrator of the story. An example of the raven saying nevermore would be this sentence here “ quoth the raven ‘nevermore’.”(line 48) Walt Whitman another critic of Poe thought of him as “almost the first sign of principle, or of the concerte or its herorisms, or the simpler affections of the heart.” (page 19) This is something i agree on though because its true. Poe’s writing usually consists of dark themes. In “the raven” he is talking about the narrator losing the love of his life. Even in a a lot of his poems they don’t always end in a good note a lot of people die in them. These are his words Mr. Poe has that indescribable something which men have agreed to call genius.” I definitely agree with this Poe is definitely a great writer with all of his stories not even just the raven he has many just as good. To name just a few “Tamerlane, alone, the oval portrait”, and these stories describes his wonderful writing. Poe created new genres with his writing making a genre of murder mystery. This lead on to stories on detectives trying to find out who killed another person and people loved
