Gothic literature can be defined as a type of literature that is written about the past, that has a distant location, and has a supernatural element. Elements of Gothic Literature: The Raven is an example of modern Gothic Literature. The Raven has a bleak setting, gothic villain, and a recurring symbolism. In the story, The Raven is a very bleak setting. In the story, The Raven, the creator chose the setting inside the Chamber during a cold and dreary night. The author gives a bleak setting, such as a “bleak December” to keep the reader close to the story. The black chamber is a gray, dark and rustic room, and the narrator is inside of it. In the story of the Raven, the narrator is haunted by a noise he is sure he is hearing, the rapping of his chamber door.which he thinks is a visitor(Poe). The Chamber is in a dark and rustic state with the feeling of being alone in the dark. This isolates the narrator and puts him in the darkest area of the story. Which creates a bleak and depressing setting for the reader. The narrator tries to empathize as much as possible to create a certain setting while the narrator’s gloomy setting is considered gothic.
