Reading enhances many aspects of people’s lives. It improves verbal skills, concentration skills, imagination, memory, and reduces stress. One out of every four children in America today grow up without learning how to read (“11 Facts about Literacy”). Being illiterate not only restricts reading and writing, but also communicating and developing in the world. Illiteracy can make people feel embarrassed, lower their self esteem, and put a cap on their opportunities. Teaching children reading skills is important, but it is also important for children to like reading. Difficulties in reading is a cruel cycle. Children who hate to read often don’t, this leads to lack of confidence and increases the child’s hate for reading. Those children who despise reading will grow into adults who despise reading. To change this vicious cycle, the attitudes taken while reading need to be valued just as much as skills. Teachers are not solely responsible for supporting reading; it is up to the community. The reminders are Prep, Welcome, Read, Close, and Wrap-up. Prep involves making sure the animal is properly trained, bringing the reading and therapy supplies, and being prepared for the different reactions children have to the animal. The Welcome step is defining the space needed for the session; arranging materials, introducing the animal and volunteers, and getting to known the reader. When working in the Read step, it is important to be flexible and positive. Children often need help with reading and it’s important to be patient and understanding while being enthusiastic. When closing the session the volunteers often thank the reader, make suggestions for further reading, and may even reward the reader with a treat.
