The Real Housewives of New York City is one of my favorite shows on TV because of its ridiculousness and dramatics. It is a reality TV series featured on the Bravo network and is the second installment of The Real Housewives franchise that features prominent women in the New York City area (“The Real Housewives…”). Because of the similarities in content and production, it is evident that Bravo is part of a larger conglomerate. Networks similar to Bravo, such as E! Entertainment Television and Oxygen feature reality TV shows and docu-series. However, even with these similarities, it is difficult to discern their parent company just from the content. Similar to Bravo’s prosperity in reality TV, other channels under Comcast’s network have also thrived from comparable content. Because it has benefited from reality television and docu-series in one channel, Comcast has replicated those types of shows across their networks. These shows differ in content but are still the same genre. On primetime television, there are numerous competitive reality shows that NBC airs such as The Biggest Loser, The Apprentice, and The Voice. However, on channels like Bravo, the reality shows focus more on experience. Audiences can peer into the lives of people that live vastly different lifestyles than the average American with programs like The Real Housewives of New York, Million Dollar Listing, and Flipping Out. It, along with the other major media corporations, have built a quasi-monopoly, where people do not have a real choice when it comes to anything related to telecommunications. Although I know how they operate, I do not believe that I would stop myself or my family and friends from watching any programming from the stations under the Comcast name. However, I would proceed with caution when examining the services provided by the large telecommunications corporations and would advocate for more regulation that restricts the monopolistic tendencies that these companies
