Most people in life have an object or possession that symbolizes something or someone. A fiction novel by Stephen Crane, The Red Badge of Courage takes place during the Civil War. The civil war was when United States of America north and south were fighting each other. Henry Fleming the main character as well known as the youth, is a young boy who wanted to fight in the war. He gets into the army, and fights for the Union. A fiction novel by John Knowles, A Separate Peace which takes place during World War Two. However, in Crane’s fiction novel there is symbolism which connects to the theme. After a battle Henry Fleming looks at the wounded soldiers. Fleming “wished that he, too, had a wound, a red badge of courage” (Crane 57). During war soldier are awarded medals or badges for their bravery and courage. This badge that Fleming wish is not an ordinary red badge of courage penned onto a soldier. Henry wishes that he will get a battle wound, which will give him a scare. This scare will show his courage and bravery in battle. Most solider that is shot or wounded, they mostly do not survive. Fleming went into battle not knowing that wound that he wished for may kill him. Some soldiers in war are not even close to the action they do not fight at all. As Gene Forrester refers back to his past, he in counters the tree that he and Fenny jumped off of. Gene said “the tree was not only stripped by the cold season, it seemed weary from age, enfeebled, dry” (Knowles 14). Forrester and Fenny friendship started all because of a tree. When they jumped of the tree they started their Super Suicide Society. The tree is what Forrester used to break Finny’s leg. If Finny’s leg was not broken and as fragile, Finny would of not died. This is the tree that brought them together as friends, and it is what killed Finny. In Knowles novel the theme is coming of age. Forrester all ways though that tree was the biggest and scariest tree in the forest. He later gets drafted to the military and fights in World War Two. Once Forrester gets out of the military, he goes back to the tree. When Forrester sees the tree he notice that the tree is the same size and looks the same as all of the other trees in the forest. The tree was warned out and broken down just like Forrester’s and Finny friendship. In the quote it says how the tree was stripped by the cold season. It also said how the tree not the only one. The quote refers to the Forrester’s himself of how ashamed he is by his actions. Forrester has deep regrets about killing his friend Finny.
