This passage from The Red Badge of Courage shows confidence and a youth that has changed his ways from being a coward to a confident man who has courage to fight. The point of view is from Henry’s eyes and mind through out the novel. As this book progresses he learns that he can transcend his own fears. When the passage says “He smiled briefly when he saw men dodge and duck at the long screeching’s of shells that were thrown in giant handfuls over them.” gives us the impression that he has no fear because he is standing confidently and laughing at the men dodging and ducking.
