Have you ever experienced or known someone who did not have the courage or allowed fear to keep them from becoming their greatest? If so, then you’re in for a big treat. The story, The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is a story about the Civil War and deals with the main character, Henry Fleming. Stephen Crane effectively describes the setting of the Civil War and describes Henry as both fearful and a hero. The main point of the Civil War was slavery. Slavery was a massive deal for the North and South Americans. The South had grey uniforms and the North had blue. The North had more resources than the South. It was a phenomenous war between the two nations. The North disagreed on slavery, while the South supported slavery. Eventually, the North gained victory. Henry Fleming was a soldier fighting for the North. He was in the 304th division out of New York. Soon after, Henry decided to leave the farm and enlist in the war. As Henry experiences the war, he questions Wilson about whether he will run or not. Henry imagines the opposing army having the upper hand. He feels scared and helpless because he believes his regiment is not strong enough. On top of which, his best friend Jim Conklin unexpectedly died. Henry realizes this and is ashamed of his actions. All of a sudden, the enemy makes a surprise counterattack. Henry is insulted by his commander and becomes furious. Henry then becomes upset with the enemy and takes the front line to encourage other soldiers to come out and fight. Henry is then grazed by a bullet almost taking his life. As a result, he grabs hold of the enemy’s flag redeeming himself the status of a true hero. The enemy’s ammunition and troops slowly decrease and wither away. Wilson then takes his letters back.
