Their white dresses are showing the purity and innocence of them. Fitzgerald also uses the color green in The Great Gatsby to convey the theme of wealth and class. Fitzgerald uses green to symbolize money and the power it has in society.
In the beginning of the novel Jeannette Walls and her family were not doing good on cash and food and moved from place to place. Her dad and mom said they keep moving because the FBI is after them. Not everyone is lucky in this world with great parents to care for them. People may not always know how great their parents are and take them for granted. At the beginning of the novel, F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays Daisy as pure and innocent through the use of the color white. The novel goes on to explain, “They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling and fluttering as if they had just been blown back in after a short flight around the house” (Fitzgerald 8). While the use of colors mostly explains Gatsby himself, Gatsby’s mansion is also another symbolic reference that applies to the character. The huge scale of the mansion shows an immense amount of wealth but the inside of it is too vacant for one person to live in it, just like how Gatsby appears to be rich but is really lonely. Yet he tries to justify this emptiness by filling it with people every week during his parties, similarly to how he justifies how he got his fortune by making Daisy his entire focus. As a matter of fact, the entire mansion symbolizes his passion for her by using the “new money” from West Egg to build a house that is on par with the “old money” of East Egg, the people who took Daisy away from him. Their dresses slowly started to change colors, not literally of course, during the book as their imperfections were revealed. When Nick first met Myrtle, she was wearing a cream colored dress. As she started to wear yellow dresses, everything about her turned into something fake. She started pretending to be something that she is not and it made a clear representation of how yellow means false. Gatsby's car is yellow, too.
Jordan and Daisy wore white dresses. “They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling and flutteing . . .”(Fitzgerald 8) The color white adds more depth to the theme of disillusionment, because white implies that Daisy is naive and innocent. Even though white implies that Daisy is naive, one may pick up an undertone throughout the book which makes one consider that Daisy may actually be smart and capable.
White symbolizes purity and innocence but later in the novel it turns into false purity and innocence. Fitzgerald used “white” often when Nick arrived at Tom and Daisy's house for the first time, “The windows were ajar and gleaming white against the fresh grass outside that seemed to grow a little way into the house”(Fitzgerald 8), this sentence also connects the color green with daisy by saying the grass seemed to grow a way into the house. In chapter 1, Fitzgerald describes Daisy in an innocent way, “Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it, bright eyes and a bright passionate mouth, but there was an excitement in her voice that men who had cared for her found difficult to forget … hour” (Fitzgerald 9). The thought of white being pure eventually turned into false purity, the characters were not actually pure and innocent. For example, when Gatsby wanted to meet Daisy for the first time in five years, “he wore a white suit as if to show that he was good and pure, when in reality he was not” (Wallace).
On March 7th, I had the privilege of attending a performance called “The Castle” written and performed by four wonderful and talented people – Rory Anderson, Ervin Hunt, Victor Rojas, and Vilma Oritz Donovan. As I traveled all the way to the Engleman Recital Hall at Baruch College, I was excited because I have never ever heard of a performance where ex- convicts come in to tell their stories. After more than an hour, I came to the conclusion that this performance was absolutely astonishing and exceeded my expectations. In “The Castle,” the four performers each beautifully told their story of how they ended up on dark path, leading up to their incarceration.
Along with the innocence and pure beauty white represents it also symbolizes empty, vacuity, superficiality, ruthlessness and selfishness to a large extent in the book. Contrary to her outward beauty, Daisy exhibits corrupt, empty, and selfish intentions. Fitzgerald new use of the color white illustrates the facade Daisy puts up to hide her snobbish and conceited view of her life style. From the very start of the book Fitzgerald uses white to describe the luxury of the upper class when he talks about Daisy and Tom's house saying "their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay" (Fitzgerald 6). Daisy's lives a lifetime full of nothing except luxurious things.
The shade of blue he uses is very dominant as it ties her apron and sleeves to the table cloth and to the cupids on the baseboards. The redness of the pitcher matches her skirt, the floor, her facial skin tones, and the footwarmer, and blends in with the yellows used to paint the bread. The colors in bread also causes the viewer to flow to the yellow and gold color in her shirt and to the gold decoration on the wall behind her and to the left.
