After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor the United states went into World War II, many people think that the Japanese living near the West Coast aid Japan even though they have no evidence of them doing any wrong. If the person race is Japanese or if their face look Japanese they had to move to an internment camp. The nonfiction story “Farewell to Manzanar” by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston had to face discrimination through her time at Japanese internment camp. Another nonfiction, memoir called “The Bracelet” by Yoshiko Uchida. The story explain that the narrator were having similar experience even though they both live in different area.
That the world does exist outside the cruelty bloody Vietnam war. It shows that the men are so emotionally damage and physically that they lost their train of thought about the world or the realistic part of it,it’s kind of sad.
I chose the book Black Hearts by Jim Frederick because it was recommended to me by First Lieutenant Smaldone. He had to read it as course material during his training at TBS (The Basic School). Officers go to TBS following Officer Candidate School where newly commissioned officers learn to lead and inspire fellow Marines. Black Hearts is a non-fiction story about the 502nd Infantry Regiment’s deployment to a region south of Baghdad, Iraq and it’s breakdown of leadership, morale, and discipline. The Unit was known as “The Black Heart Brigade.”
When put into the Japanese Internment Camps, Japanese-Americans were held at gunpoint and forced to leave their homes. After they were released from the camps, Japanese-Americans didn’t have a home to go back to. Not to mention the fact that the Nazi Concentration Camps left survivors mentally damaged and some mentally and physically disabled while the Japanese Internment Camps left survivors in a stable condition. In the Nazi Concentration Camps, prisoners were used as test subjects and those who did survive were left mentally or physically disabled. Even then,
There are many stories from of the Holocaust throughout history, and the world. Every story is unique to the Jew’s situation. Most stories end in them escaping and being able to live, right? Well that might be true, but there are stories of friends, family members, and seeing other innocent people die. Two examples of stories told about the Holocaust would be, Night by Elie Wiesel, and Life is Beautiful directed by Roberto Benigni.
Many Americans saw the internment camps through the government’s persuasion. The United States made the internment camps sound enjoyable and humane, they made documentaries showing the camps showing nothing but happy individuals when there was really a hidden fear. Matsuda opened the eyes of many Americans showing how hard it was to live in the camps and how mentally cruel it could be. Matsuda reveals what it is like during World War II as a Japanese American, through family life, emotional stress, long term effects of interment, and her patriotism and the sacrifices she had to make being in the internment
For many Jews in the 1940’s, Auschwitz and Buna were a living nightmare. There were many scenes, ideas and feelings that were unforgettable for me. The first scenes that I found shocking were when Elie Wiesel saw the bodies of babies being thrown in a flame. I couldn’t imagine watching small, innocent bodies being treated like that. Second, the lack of mercy at the concentration camp were unbelievable.
December 7th of 1941 America would face a horrific scene in their own homeland, the Japanese would attack Pearl Harbor with their Air Force not once but twice. That same day President John F. Kennedy would decide to place the Japanese Americans, living in the country at the time, in internment camps. The civilians would not have a clue what they would be put up against, now they would have to encounter various obstacles to make sure they would be able to survive. “The camps were prisons, with armed soldiers around the perimeters, barbed wire. and controls over every aspect of life”(Chang).
The German Americans and The Italian Americans was not put into camps because their white. That show how racist people are! In the Justice Denied Report, the author writes, “ Widespread ignorance of Japanese Americans contributed to a policy conceived in haste and executed in an atmosphere of fear and anger at Japan.” This shows that Americans were scared of Japanese Americans and they were placed in camps because of this fear.
Present throughout the book is the theme of disillusionment. In the school, they’ve been told by their schoolmasters and parents that unless they join the war, they would remain cowards. They see propaganda after propaganda, all alluding towards the glory of battle and warfare. Out on the front, they realize that nothing was further from the truth. Their dreams of being heroes shattered, like when they compare themselves to the soldier on a poster in chapter 7.
The Holocaust is the most significant historical event that I have studied so far. This tragic event took place during World War II and only very few survivors lived to share their shocking experiences. I have read a few of these survivor’s stories, such as Night, by Elie Wiesel and it has personally impacted me and influenced my thinking in various ways. The Holocaust was the greatest act of hate, violence, and anti-semitism.
This story helps depicts just have cruel Americans were to each other mainly because the color of someone’s skin. Also, how they’d take a man, a man who is harmless and was just giving water to a soldier, from his family that is probably starving and suffering from the war

Immigration in America is nothing new and it has had an impact on society for many years. People from all over come to America for a fresh start and to get away from any problems. You can’t really blame them for wanting to get away from where ever and wanting to start over. As George Takei talks about his experience as a Japanese-American and his view of the American Dream. Immigrants have many differences while in America.
A Soldier’s Dilemma Like many others in his regiment, Henry Fleming, protagonist in The Red Badge of Courage, expects the Battle of Chancellorsville to be filled with heroism and legendary acts of dauntless heroism. Heroism, however, seems nowhere to be found, and Henry is left questioning his own valor. In The Red Badge of Courage, Crane writes Henry Fleming as a flawed yet good-hearted character by revealing his inner thoughts as he runs from the battle, his actions directed toward comrades, and by displaying Henry’s differences at the end of the story to emphasize the inner struggle between courage and cowardice.
