The Reemergence of Fleetwood Mac Music Throughout Decades
Fleetwood Mac is a British American rock band with a storied history spanning multiple genres, decades, and band members. Fleetwood Mac was one of the most popular bands of the 70s and 80s, with their discography including their self-titled album, Rumours, Tusk, Mirage, and Tango in the Night during this period (Fleetwood Mac Albums and Discography). The band was especially successful with Rumours, their most popular album to date. The album spent 31 weeks atop the charts, received a Grammy for Album of the Year, and is now one of the best-selling albums of all time, with more than 45 million copies sold (Bertram).

The song was a commercial and critical hit in the United States, reaching the Billboard Top 50, and earning a spot in the Rolling Stones “Top 500 Songs of All Time” list (Moore). The song has since been covered multiple times, with the most notable covers being done by The Smashing Pumpkins and Dixie Chicks. The Smashing Pumpkins, an alternative rock band popular in the 90s, released their cover in 1994, garnering commercial success (an appearance in Billboard’s Alternative Airplay top 10), and even the approval of Fleetwood Mac band member Stevie Nicks (Whately). Nicks stated in an online interview about the cover, “There's nothing more pleasing to a songwriter than [someone else] doing one of their songs… I believe that my poetry is really meant for everyone, no matter what age.” (Whately). This new cover of “Landslide” once again brought Fleetwood Mac into relevancy, while also exposing their music to a new mass of people. The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, a female country band, later released their cover of “Landslide” in 2002 as a single for their new album, Home (Home- Discogs). This cover song also received critical and commercial acclaim, due largely to the band's unique two and three-part harmonies.
