I believe the past, present, and future are interconnected because of people, art, written records, and events. Today, people have access to all the knowledge they could ever want with just a few clicks on a keyboard. Ronald Reagan, George Orwell’s book 1984, and Mark Rothko’s paintings are all timeless parts of history for the United States. Each part gives us a glimpse into the past while also offering us a window into the future. I believe each of these things play a vital part in history and still have strong relations to today. The protagonist, Winston Smith is a low level member of society. He works at the Ministry of Truth. He lives in Oceania which is one of the three main powers of the world. The other two powers are Eurasia and Eastasia. His job is to alter all documents to give the proper perspective of the Party. The Party controls every part of life. By comparison,Winston and the Party have different views in terms of individuality. Winston would like to have individual thoughts but the Party will execute anyone for expressing any forms of individuality. Throughout Winston’s time at the Ministry of Truth he meets a women named Julia and falls in love with her. One day, Julia gives Winston a note saying I love you. Julia and Winston meet up at various times in different locations so that the Party does not catch them. Eventually, Winston finds an apartment to rent from a gentlemen by the man of Mr. Charrington. Later on in the story we find out that Mr. Charrington is a member of the Thought Police. Originally, Julia and Winston began meeting at the apartment because they thought there was not a telescreen. The telescreen monitors all movement and sound. Telescreens are similar to today’s cellphones. Before Winston and Emily get caught by Mr. Charrington, they join the Brotherhood which is the complete opposite of the Party. Mark Rothko’s paintings were intended to insight a meditative or spiritual experience. His paintings can be described as rectangular blocks of floating color with significant open spaces.
