The complex relation between emotions and social norms is quite complex because the social norms take priority over emotions. Mr Pickle and Godfrey even though they cant stand each other they still take the time to do polite gestures like help each other with their coats and boots when they are going to begin their duel. The social norms seem like they have been established for a while and honor seems to be the only ideology that is followed through. Social norms take priority over anything it seems because even though something tragic were to occur it would be somewhat required for people back in this time period to act maturely and show respect towards others. Both Godfrey and Mr. Pickles, although furious and upset with one another, take the time to do everything in their power to keep their feud clean and honorable. After Godfrey wins the duel he even lets Mr. Pickles live and in doing so destroyed Mr. Pickles reputation. When they decided to dual Godfrey even offered to use pistols because he was excellent as a swordsman because he was a solider so he gave an equal opportunity to Mr. Pickles, but Mr. Pickles thought too highly of himself and declined the offer. This gesture again goes back to these social norms that for no reason take priority over absolutely everything. These types of social norms have been dying and are less prominent in recent times like the most common one that states the male is the head of the household and is the breadwinner while the female takes care of the children and
