Although Jesus speaks of “an hour [that] is coming, and is now”, Jesus’s words to the woman are in light of the past, the Old Testament. Jesus is referring to the Old Testament Messianic prophecies, and He is confirming His fulfilment, and even His transcending, of these prophesies. When the woman tries to divert the conversation to the concern of the two different places of worship, Jesus tells her “an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father…an hour is coming, and is now, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (Jn 4:21-23). al. 963). Jesus is the ‘chief of the mountains’ as He is the true temple and additionally, He is ‘raised above the hills’ in His resurrection as He rose in three days (Jn 2:19). Jesus fulfils this prophesy as He tabernacles among us and through His resurrection. Jesus also fulfils restoration. Isaiah 55:1 says, “every one who thirsts, come to the waters”. Isaiah is speaking of “spiritual thirst,” as in the desire to worship and atone for sins (Kenneth et. al. 1033). When Jesus offers the woman “living water” and says those who drink it “shall never thirst” and have “eternal life”, He is alluding to quenching the spiritual thirst Isaiah mentioned and offering the gift of God of salvation (Jn 4:10,14). Jesus is the dispenser of the eternal life and Holy Spirit, which Isaiah is professing. He exceeds this Old Testament expectation by not only being the dispenser of the living water, but also being “life” itself (Jn 1:4). Jesus is not only the giver of the gifts of God, but He is God. Jesus proclaims in John, “the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life”
