Dystopia

Why is dystopian fiction incredibly popular? A dystopia is something in a state of injustice or suffering so why would readers keep coming back to read something terrible. Some powerful elements of a dystopia are fear, isolation, and darkness. I've also noticed these elements most in dystopian fiction. Here are some examples of fear, isolation, and darkness in dystopian fiction.

“The Road” by Cormac McCarthy is a great example of fear in dystopias. the main the character(boy) expresses himself being scared many times enhancing the quality of the story. One example of a boy expressing himself is “What he could bear in the waking world he could not by night and he sat awake for fear the dream would return ''. The element of fear is a very powerful element in all types of literature but it's extremely powerful in dystopian fiction. Another example from The Road is this quote which shows fear and isolation “What would you do if I died? If you died I would want to die too. So you could be with me? Yes. So I could be with you. Okay.” this shows the main character in fear of being isolated by himself it's a very common that authors use to show fear …show more content…

Robert had all the freedom in the world, but no one to experience it with. He expresses these feelings when he exclaims, “This is Robert Morgan. If someone can hear me, answer me. For god's sake, answer me” this was a very powerful quote which shows that a utopia without any people or any living thing to experience it with is a dystopia. This is a great example of a hidden dystopia in a utopia. Another example from the last man on earth is this quote “Ever since I was a kid, I've had a fear of being scared.” This quote shows fear and isolation, the setting in which the character was in had him trapped alone with him and his
