The Road by McCarthy is a prime example of representing how the characters experience exile in both alienating and enriching forms. The book is about a father and a boy that are running away from the darkness of the world. The conditions that they are put in are excruciating because of the cold temperatures and the lack of resources that make it extremely harder to come to a conclusion on what the next step is. Exile teaches both the father and the son on how to depend on each other based on the cards they are dealt with, they are put through difficult task but they keep each other inspired through the darkness and decisions they take.
Because the son has been so starved, he is willing to do anything to gain some sort of food and increase his lifespan. This can further be explained when the father exclaims “Don’t you recognize me? I’m your father”, this insinuates that the son shouldn’t be harming his father, this explains that to this boy family relationships should be important to his self identity. Nevertheless, with this desperation for food and therefore survival, the son can’t focus on anyone else’s needs, he instead has to neglect all others, including his father despite the assumption he most likely gave every part of his own being to keep his son safe and protected. Another example of food being more important than family is when the main character, Eliezer,
Upon taking office McCarthy was already facing issues that dealt with police brutally. In regards to the shooting of an unarmed African American man captured on video, McCarthy acknowledge that the officer had previously shot two other people and that he shouldn’t of been on the street. McCarthy along with Rob Emanuel acknowledged the long history of excessive force and misconduct of the Chicago Police Department. Knowing that Van Dyke had over a dozen complaints against him including serious ones MCarthy failed to take him of the streets. Not only was McCarthy not taking action by implementing new rules in his department to fix the complaints of excessive force and misconduct, but he was covering up things as well.
Father son bonds are arguably the most important and influential things on a child’s life. In Night by Elie Wiesel Eliezer’s father harms his chances of surviving. Eliezer and his father get put into a concentration camp. There surviving is hard enough, let alone caring for and giving your food to your father when it should be the other way around. Although some would argue that eliezer’s father helps him through the camp, his father ultimately weighs him down and harms eliezer’s chance of survival through him becoming increasingly frail and weak, his health deteriorating further, and his becoming increaingly dependant on Eliezer for survival.

Despite all the horrors that they face, the small family shares a deep connection. This allows for meaning and value in their lives amid all the suffering and pain. The existence of this relationship makes the struggle worthwhile. Many of the days the man and boy spend together they are working toward a common goal, the man teaching the boy about many things and the kid teaching his father to not leave the other good guys behind. For example, he coerces his father into giving food to an old, nearly blind man.
In the instance of Franek, who threatens Elie to "give [him Elie's] gold crown, [or] it will [him] costing much more" (pg.55). when Elie refuses Franek "[torments Elie's father] and on a daily basis [and thrashes] him savagely" (pg. 55). These examples show that the mood of the story creates fear and distrust that forms a kill or be killed mentality where the oppressed must become the oppressor to survive. As the saying goes, "the weak are meat, and the strong do eat" (David Mitchel, Cloud
Some days they go hungry, the weather uproots their lives, and other hindrances place a awful, dark outlook on life. Cormac Mccarthy writes about a disgusting world. It is the dying of lie on the planet, the end of the world. Not only do the gruesome events in the novel led the reader to take an opposing view, but even the setting of the novel
The thrilling novel “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy is a story about a post apocalyptic world following the lives of a man and a boy as they head south to escape the cold winter that is headed their way. Along with the cold of winter approaching they also have to deal with the new dangers of the land while traveling such as cannibals, robbers, and many more dangers. This is a tale of a unnamed man and a boy who must not only learn how to survive but find a inner “fire”, establish a code of ethic, and continue in finding reasons to live in this “new world”. With McCarthy’s unique approach to the characters of the book having no names or the cause of destruction of the world unknown it helps the reader feel the confusion and whats really important

In order to emphasize the importance of relationships in the novel, McCarthy creates two characters a man and a son who struggle mentally and physically due to their relationships. For example, throughout the course of
I think one of the reasons why McCarthy made the exact nature of the apocalyptic event so ambiguous is because he wants us to consider what can happen when everything that surrounds us has lost its goodness. He urges us to think what would happen to principles and morals in a society where commodities and even the most basic needs for survival are taken away from us. He forces us to think how civility and moral concepts can change when there are no moral codes, rules, or societal pressures to make sure that we live by acceptable standards of right and wrong. In The Road, McCarthy uses an extreme illustration to show us that people can be ugly-murderous-evil-beings because circumstances change under desperate situations. And while people are
