Courage is a quality of American culture that has endured the ages. From pre-colonial times, to the present day. This aspect of American society has been touched upon by many authors and artist in their works. “The Road Not Taken”, by Robert Frost, displays this American trait, even though it was not intended to when written. “The Road Not Taken” is a poem about having the courage to choose one’s own path in life. This poem tells of the courage that is inside of every American, past and present, and is an analogy to the tough decisions we make throughout our lives.
“The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost is a poem about courage to determine one’s own destiny. Frost ends his poem by saying, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— / I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference” (Frost 19-20). Of all the phrases in the world, these words by Robert Frost are of the most common I have heard: “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— / I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference” (Frost 19-20). There have been so many instances in my life in which I have heard those words. For example: I play lacrosse, and almost every single coach or motivational speaker that I have had the pleasure of listening to has brought up some version of the quote above. They all wanted to get a specific message into my head: you have to work hard if you want to succeed, and live a more fulfilling life.
