In the novel, The Rock and The River by Kekla Magoon, three different characters, Roland, Stick and Sam have different approaches to the Civil Rights movement in the 60s. Sam feels overwhelmed by his father and brother's different political views. The author demonstrates that multiple approaches are necessary in the quest for equality and civil rights as Sam thinks about choosing his father's path as non-violent protest or his brother's path as he is in the black panther group. Body paragraph 1 One path shown by Roland's children. Stick and Roland throughout the novel keep bumping heads because they have different political views. Stick and Roland have their differences during the novel due to the fact that both of them have different political views as Stick is involved with the black panther group and could be violent. An example of stick being in the black panther group in the text is “I'm a panther stick broke through father tirade with a calm breath father sucked in his belly sucked back the words that would have come next. Not in my house” This can be found on page 113 this shows the Differences between stick and his father this philosophy impacts Sam because he is stuck on what side to choose and is also influenced by both his father and stick.Another piece of evidence from the text is “Stick burst Ford and grab one of the white men pulling him off a grade haired woman who dropped crime to the ground the man slammed an elbow into sticks bony chest stick groaned then grabbed the man by the hair and punched him in the face” this can be on page 5 this shows stick fight or flight mode. this also has a influence on sam to all ways protect others and stand up for
