Lawrence, a little boy learns at a young age that his family is less fortunate when it comes to monetary consumption. As time goes on, the boy finds a hobby with a hired help. This hobby was to bet on horses in the horse races. Paul and Bessett worked together and began to collect a good amount of money, more than they knew what do with. The little boy, Paul, doesn’t have a reason for collecting the money and betting more to gain more. Until one day that he realizes that his mother is in need of the money. His uncle makes it possible for him to link the money to her account without her knowing of its origins. ‘“Didn’t you have anything nice in the post for your birthday, mother?” said Paul. “Quite moderately nice,” she said, her voice cold and absent.’ (page 1256) After this short conversation, Paul learned that she wanted the money all at once, making him wonder if his mother was ungrateful. He immediately thought that what he gave her wasn’t enough. Lawrence ends the story with the death of Paul, as a final result of his mother’s greed which flowed through him.
