Summary: The book The Ghost Map is set in 1854 when a disease called cholera broke out in England, again as it had before, starting in the 1830’s. The book mainly focuses on the two million plus people residing in London. The people in London didn’t know what was causing this disease at first, but as the book progresses we find out that it’s caused when you ingest water contaminated with feces. This book takes you through the struggles and havoc that the disease caused among the people and their ultimate understanding and solution.

Serfs lived in the village of the lord’s manor with between fifteen and twenty other families, and even as many as fifty on large manors (Fierro 265). They worked together in their labor, and some even developed agricultural technology with each other such as the heavy-wheeled plow and the tandem harness (266). The serfs’ relationship with the clergy was just as, if not more important than their relationships with each other. The serfs relied on the clergy to administer the sacraments to them, as well as to prepare them for their eternal state.

As a courtier, Raleigh was able to move up in the world and became a favorite of the queen. This, then, was the role of the courtier: to serve the monarchy, by attending the royal court and advising the king and queen on what to say or to give them guidance. The courtier had the privilege of to residing in the palace, and in that way he or she could be close to the king and could be summoned when needed.
Peasants are never able to rise pass their classes and succeed. They are sworn to serve their lord and work his lands till the day they die. Peasants are bound in the chain of society with no way to untangle themselves, and the only reason for all this is the Manorial System that judges a person not by ability, but from the family they are born from and the wealth they have acquired. Peasants are given the scraps of society quite literally. The house their entire life is nothing more than dirt and straw with nothing luxurious about any of it.
