The Great Gatsby was F. Scott Fitzgeralds 's perspective on the degenerating society of America along with the concept of the American Dream in the 1920s. Today in our society, one problem that has always piqued my interest is greed. Greed has been a problem in society since mankind has started, and it continues to grow and take different shape and form. The Great Gatsby is a book where greed is the root of the story 's conflict and how it is the bane of America’s morals existence. The novel takes place in the 1920s, narrated by the protagonist Nick Carraway.
The novel The Great Gatsby is written by an American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was published in 1925. This work points out the life of cast of characters living in fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. F. Scott Fitzgerald, born on 24 September 1896 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, created three main characters- Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan and Nick Carraway and showed us his conception of America in the 1920s. The Great Gatsby is told entirely through Nick’s eyes; his thoughts and perceptions shape and colour the story.

Three things in the first chapter that prove the setting of the story is England, 1843 are the following: “Saint Paul’s Churchyard” (3),“The treadmill and the Poor Law” were part of England’s English Poor Laws (7), “Scrooge had as little of what is called fancy about him as any man in the city of London” (9). 2. The characters that have been introduced so far have been Scrooge’s nephew Fred, Marley’s ghost (Marley was his business partner), the Portly Gentlemen who ask Scrooge if he wishes to donated, and his clerk Bob who works for him. 3.

Irresponsibility is a theme prevalent throughout the novel seen in characters like Owl Eyes, Jordan, and Daisy; their actions surrounding car accidents and conversations with other characters provide evidence that Fitzgerald desired to convey the irresponsibility of the upper class. At the first party, Nick attends there is an accident as guests begin to leave, and he realizes Owl Eyes was the driver. Owl Eyes makes excuses for his actions and says, “‘Don’t ask me... I know very little about driving - next to nothing” (Fitzgerald 54) while others try to explain to him that the wheel came off and he cannot simply drive away. The topic of driving appears again in a conversation between Nick and Jordan where she states, “‘It take two to make an accident’”
Many people tried to stop the sell of alcohol. That didn't stop people though.through mysterious ways. Secrecy was a way of life. Also addiction was very bad. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzerald expresses a negative view of the 1920's and the American Dream. He does this using the characters, setting, and symbolism. One character Fitzgerald uses to show his view of the 1920s is Nick. Nick doesn't have much of an effect on the story, he just observes everything as it happens and makes silent judgements of those around him. The reader experiences the story through his eyes and sees the world the way Nick perceives it.
From a young age, we have been taught what behavior is acceptable and deemed good, and what is immoral or bad. In the novel, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, many of the characters require questioning regarding if they should be classified as truly moral people who exhibit goodness or correctness in their lifestyles. In their society, the goals shared by all are becoming rich and fitting in, and often in order to meet them, actions are taken which harm others but benefit themselves. The author conveys that morality has little value to the characters in Gatsby because they take any means necessary in order to achieve their dreams and fail to think about the consequences of their impulsive actions.
