In the play of Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, communication sets the tone by a display of word choice, analogies and emotion to elicit an evil, mysterious and miserable tone. As an example, communication sets the tone of mystery through word choice. While talking to Macbeth, Lady Macbeth tells him to “hide your fires; Let not light see my black and deep desires” (1.4.52-53). Shakespeare is letting the reader ponder on what might happen in the story. It is apparent that the reader does not exactly know what the desires are. This type of cryptic communication that Lady Macbeth is directly speaking sets up an eerie atmosphere. Additionally, the author utilizes communication by planting an evil tone through analogies.
