When it comes to fear in the book The Alchemist is seen so many times. You start out with Santiago talking about how he was telling his stories to the Merchants daughter “He went on telling stories about his travels, and her bright, Moorish eyes went wide with fear and surprise. ”(p.6) this young lady had fear from just the stories that Santiago was telling. She did not fear because it was insanely scary but because it was different. A little later in the book there is more fear when Santiago is talking to The Crystal Merchant.

While at the Oasis of Al-Fayoum, the elder chieftain of the oasis tells Santiago the story of Joseph of Egypt. Joseph was enslaved for being a dreamer, but he persevered and managed to become an important counselor to the Pharaoh of Egypt. This Personal Legend could have suited Santiago because of his connection to the Soul of the World. The Soul of the World is a spiritual unity that binds all forms of nature together. Santiago knew he wanted to follow his dreams; it was helpful when he learned that “When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it” because he knew he was now destined to complete his goal, and not somebody else’s (Coelho 64).
Santiago has many setbacks that occurred during his destination to the pyramids. It can be observed that he was wise and did not rush into danger. He lets himself take breaks to fully grasp all the trouble that he is involved in and with the right motivation he responded wisely and does not let it consume him. Every test that Santiago endured was a threat to grip him away from his quest, beginning his quest he was robbed of all his money instead of turning back to his old life he used his life skills to make back the resources that were stolen. Every challenge that was brought to Santiago was a intimidation that was supposed to crack him and turn back to his old life as a shepherd.
This is illuminated when the Alchemist says, “‘There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure’” (141). This particular moment shows that even though Santiago has both the ability and the knowledge to achieve his dream, it is impossible to attain it if he fears even attempting to reach it. Consequently, this fear acts as his enemy and a barrier that stands in the way of the meaningful and happy life he is destined to accomplish. Furthermore, another one of his fears is the fear of losing what he believes he has already earned. ” He reminded himself that he had been a shepherd and that he could be a shepherd again.

A personal legend is not just the result found at the end of Santiago's life. It’s more than simply reaching final destination. Santiago personal legend is achieved when he completes what he is doing. “It’s true that everything has it’s personal legend ,but one day that personal legend will be realized ,so each thing has to transform itself into something better ,and to acquire a new personal legend, until someday, the soul of the world becomes one only thing.”
Decision-making through the theory of Existentialism Existentialism is a philosophy which means finding self or finding meaning of life. It is theory which talks about freedom. Paulo Coelho in the novel The Alchemist talks about Santiago’s dilemmas and how he takes decision.
“The Old Man and the Sea” is a short story, with defeat as one of its many themes, written in 1951 by American author Ernest Hemingway. Defeat is shown throughout the short novel in ways including when Santiago, the old man, has not caught a fish for 84 days then when he finally hooks a fish, it is a marlin that is too heavy to bring aboard. Then as the man tries to bring the marlin ashore by pulling it along the side of his boat, sharks eat the marlin. This along with other events shows me that Santiago was ultimately defeated. Santiago is a man that lives in a small village who fishes for food, not recreationally.
