The ancients Greek worshiped many gods. Gods and goddess live on top of Mount Olympus. The Mountain Olympus is the highest mountain in the world. The gods were involved in the lives of human. Zeus is the mane god.
Science today is way more advanced than back in 650 B.C.E. and we have tools and scientists that explain the natural phenomena that we still deal with today. The Greeks however had a very different way of explaining these natural phenomena. The Greeks used Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, and their gods to explain these phenomena for them. Yan covers these phenomena like Earthquakes which were previously thought to had been caused by the sea god, Poseidon, or that storms were caused by Zeus and that the Sun came up everyday thanks to Helios. Which today are now proved through orbit of the Earth and low and high air pressure.
The gods play a big part within The Odyssey to a point where they interact with the characters were they can aide or hinder them. Athena plays an important role within the first couple of books in The Odyssey. Athena goes to Ithica while disguised as one of Telemachus’ father’s old friends named Mentes. As Mentes, she tells Telemachus to get rid of the people from his father’s land and to ask of his father’s whereabouts in Sparta. Why does Athena approach Telemachus disguised?
They were also said to bring the good and the evil to the Greek people. One god that over powered all other gods and goddesses was Zeus. He played many roles in the Greek community and helped out in many ways. Although Zeus is best known as the leader of all gods, he is also known for his mythical influence on the modern day

In the term paper, I am going to write about the Greek gods. I am writing about this topic because I take Latin, and the gods have always been an interesting topic to me. I am going to investigate what they were needed for, and how they became to be the gods they are now. Once I answer these questions, I will be able to answer the question on why the Greek gods were so important.
In the Odyssey, I feel as if the Gods role was to function more as spiritual guides and as support for the human of choice. An example being Athena reuniting Odessyus and his son after 20 years, Hermes warning Odysseus of Circes witchcraft, and Circes giving him directions. Yet, I also feel as if they punish for poor behavior as well.
Throughout the epic, gods play the role of savior and tormentor. If Poseidon had not decided to attack Odysseus the story would have developed radically different. There would have been no life-threatening obstacle, but simply a path home. Of course this simply cannot occur, hence the fact it’s an epic.

For human’s deities are omnipotent, authoritative, dominant and immortal. If there is a need for supplication due to conflict or complication, humans turn towards the divine. Within the Iliad there are various gods who scheme a very significant role in the war of Trojan. The gods are very present, always observing, influencing guiding and most importantly, interfering in the actions of the humans. Athena, Apollo, and Zeus are three very influential divines and their interactions with human characters, along with interference towards the warfare is seen throughout the Iliad.

The Greek and Aztec people created their gods in order to explain natural occurrences and phenomenons in the world around them. In Greek culture, the gods looked and acted like humans and felt similar emotions, making them easily relatable, while the Aztec gods were viewed completely differently and were not similar to humans at all. The story behind Zeus was where his father started getting paranoid about his children killing him, that he started eating his own children. However, when Zeus, the sixth child was born, his wife did not let him eat him. As Zeus got older, he put a potion in his father’s wine which made him throw up the children. Then Zeus led his siblings in the battle against Kronos and Titans. They won the battle, and Zeus became King of the gods.

Unlike how most gods might act or behave in books nowadays, the gods in the Iliad share some uncommon traits.
