Going on a journey is easier said than done. Especially when emotions, friendships and the past are involved. Society tends to think of journeys to only be physical, getting from one place to the next. And although that might be true other forms of journey’s such as emotional, and spiritual may have a greater effect on people. In the book Indian Horse written by Richard Wagamese, Saul Indian horse goes on a Journey to rediscover his past. While on this journey saul discovers how friendships, emotions, and the past play a huge role in remembering and letting go of those who hurt you. Saul Indian horse is a member of the Ojibwa tribe. As a young child saul faced a lot of pain and suffering. Saul physical journey begins at Gods Lake after the tragic death of his older brother Benjamin. Father Lebourtille introduced Saul to the game of hockey, this sport soon helps saul leave the school. Saul found hope in hockey it made him feel like he was free. “ I no longer felt the hopeless, chill air around me, because I had father Leboutilier, the ice, the mornings and the promise of the game”(Wagamese 77). Hockey becomes the main focus in saul’s journey because it provides him with hope, and happiness two very rare things that cannot be found at the school. Father Lebotiller becomes a father figure to Saul, helping him get better and better at hockey, protecting him from the other nuns and priests. Sauls stated that “ father leboutilier was my ally, when the nuns and priests got to hard on me he was there to mediate and defend me” (Wagamese 63). Father Leboutilier acts us a father towards Saul. He provides Saul with love and kindness that a parent would give to their own child. And since Saul lost his entire family, his newfound relationship provides him with safety and
