What is man? Many ponder this thought of what the true definition of man. Are we evil or good, why did evil surface, and where has goodness gone? Some people have thought they’ve figured it out. Some turn to a biblical standpoint other may see a world view. There are many proofs show for each of these ideas. Sin is our first nature. We must be taught to be good, not evil.

We lie, discriminate, hate, and sometimes even murder. A huge example can be seen in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Tom, a man of color, is falsely accused of rape because a father cannot bear the truth of his daughter. Atticus was appointed to defend him. At this time it was rare to see a man of color walk away from any crimes. As the trial begins and the truth unfolds, Tom may have a chance to walk free. However, the jury decides to charge him guilty. As Atticus encourages him not to give up he is shot and killed. Many things can be pulled from this book. First being the hatred towards certain men. Although Tom was innocent, simply because of his skin tone he was seen as guilty. A family lost their dad and husband. Not only did Tom suffer, but his family did too. With all the racism and hatred to the side you can also pull good from this book. Tom was a caring man, his heart ached for people and the way they were treated. Atticus was also a man of honesty, integrity, and humbleness. Atticus’ children can even bring good into sight. They accepted a boy who was not ‘normal’ to the people at that time. Tom and his wife are both full of greed, they crave money and attention. One-day Tom runs into the devil and is offered a deal, his soul for riches. He goes home to tell his wife and decides to turn the offer down. However, his wife was so greedy she took their china for a trade. Instead the devil kills her. Eventually Tom trades the devil. He lives in lavish for a short while, but his life is soon claimed by the devil, with his money left behind. You can definitely see the true definition of money and greed in this story. Money is not a horrible thing, but can be very dangerous when used improperly. Greed is truly a terrible thing, but today it is so real. People have to have the best of the best, they have to be on top. They have to have the most money, the best house, the best wife, and so much more. You often forget the true value of life when all you do is want. It corrodes relationships, families, and lives. Money, when used right, can benefit you in many ways. Money can help further ministry. Money opens options of traveling to countries where God is unheard of. However, the biggest problem with money in the church is those who give to receive. There are some who want recognition for what they gave God, when He was the original giver of it all. The Devil of Tom Walker also shows regret. After Tom made his deal and lived lavish.
