Topic: What is Gilman’s motivation for writing the story? Many women experience Postpartum Depression after child birth. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Gilman’s character Jane struggles to live a fulfilling life after her diagnosis. Like her character, Gillman was also diagnosed. Her struggle was similar to many other women at the time. Gilman was diagnosed with a severe nervous continuous breakdown. Illustrated in her story, she saw Dr. Weir Mitchel, a specialist in nervous disorders (Gilman 250): He is known as one of the best in the country. Gilman was diagnosed with a nervous condition, which we now call “Postpartum Depression”: Postpartum depression is a serious mood disorder that can affect women after childbirth. Mothers with postpartum depression experience feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that may make it difficult for them to complete daily care for themselves or others. Postpartum depression can be treated in many different ways such as, Counseling, taking medications. Doctor’s main recommendation for treating postpartum depression, is daily outdoor activities to stimulate the mind. (National Institute of Mental Health 2) In conclusion, Gilman is trying to educated women about the dangers of ignoring “Postpartum Depression” and to advocate for women who are being victimized in oppressed marriages. Gilman advocate for women based on her own experience. Her motivation was to change how men should value women’s role outside of the home, will remain in our hearts forever. Women should make their voices heard respectfully. It is normal for most women to experience postpartum depression, due to hormone imbalance. Women who experience symptoms of postpartum depression should seek help. Let us as women endeavor to make our voices
