Although there are many themes in The Odyssey, the main theme is that heroes always make sacrifices. The theme is present in many ways throughout the epic poem, specifically in “The Lotus Eaters,” “The Cyclops,” and “Father and Son.” For example, in “The Lotus Eaters,” Odysseus made various sacrifices involving him and his men. To begin with, the section, “The Lotus Eaters,” reveals the theme when Odysseus sacrifices the happiness of his men, their time to rest, and everyone’s safety so that they may continue their voyage home.
Throughout The Odyssey, ancient Greek culture; art, religion, and sports affect the story plot. First, in The Odyssey, art plays an important role in the plot. For example; Penelope’s weaving means her bond that represents the marriage of her husband and her. As long as she keeps weaving, she won’t marry any of her suitors, she will still be married to Odysseus. This strategy is an example of art, which represents what she’s doing to let her suitors wait.
The Iliad by Homer The Iliad was a really good representation of the chaotic war-torn times of the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea; this includes the countries Rome and Greece. It was a time where nations were trying to expand their power and influence and warriors were claiming their spoils of war. I mean the beginning of book I of The Iliad, Achilles and Agamemnon are arguing over the rewards and the spoils of war. Agamemnon didn’t want to give up his prize girl Chryses in order to please the God Apollo and stop the plague and the rain of arrow falling from Olympus.

The Odyssey is very focused on leadership and courage, as it centers on a hero's journey. There are many parts in the epic where Homer explains the actions of an admirable leader. In the Odyssey, Odysseus exemplifies the true meaning of being a leader through courage in the face of danger, which is shown by Circe, the Sirens, and the suitors. One might wonder why it takes Odysseus ten years to return to his homeland after he has achieved victory for Ithaca in the Trojan War.

Reciprocity is an important theme in the Odyssey because it explains why Odysseus’ journey was very long and treacherous. Eurylochus, Antinous, and Odysseus all suffered consequences due to poorly made actions. Each of them made the wrong decisions which lead to death and a long/adventurous journey. Eurylochus was the first to be killed by Odysseus and his men due to his actions.

However, Cronus is not able to escape his own fate, and is conquered by Zeus in the end. He tries greatly and fails, which results in a pitiless punishment.
