Has racism always existed in America or did it originate much later when civilizations have become more settled and developed? The answer probably cannot be determined, but according to the history that was written down in the books, it has traveled a long journey. Despite the fact that racism had a crucial impact in our past, it is a negative attitude still found in our very own present society. Racism will always even in the near future especially in America, because it is inhabited by so many different cultures of different beliefs, cultures and character traits. “Elizabeth and Hazel Two Women of Little Rock” takes place in Little Rock, Arkansas during 1900’s and it is comprised of racism which affect two young girls who are Elizabeth and Hazel. This story demonstrates and exhibit the racism that was profound and present in the society during the 1950’s and 60’s. Elizabeth was a Black student and Hazel was a White student, and this is an account where they were on two different ends of the racism spectrum. During the commotion and chaos that was caused due to a couple of Black students becoming students at an all-White school, left residents in Arkansas furious. There were riots and protests when the school opened and this became a nationwide scenario where many news casts, journalists and the opinions of the rest of the nation were involved. In a recent research and study, Maxwell, Brevard, Abrams and Belgrave conduct a study saying that, “Regarding to racial identity, skin color satisfaction, skin color and internal racism are all factors that caused by the derogative impression of racism towards Blacks” (438). Many of them are not satisfied or offended by having features that are dominant in Blacks and rather have traits that are more appealing and attractive to others. An example that presents this idea is, “African Americans to evaluate themselves and other members in the culture have a perception where light skin, narrow nose and thin lips are much more desirable traits compared to dark skin, thick nose and wide lips” (439).
