Realism is the movement that aims to portray life in its realistic essence. Authors of realism tend to showcase their characters as common everyday people experiencing real problems in a non-idealistic setting. Literary characters spoke in simple ordinary language instead of complex poetic speech. The plot is often not as significant as the characters themselves. The aim is to display the true nature of human. Realist authors often do not incorporate personal’s commentary in the work; this gives readers the power to ponder and interpret for themselves the character’s actions in the story. An example of realism literature is Kate Chopin’s novel “The Awakening”. The story focuses on Edna Pontellier, the wife of Leonce Pontellier. She is comfortable in her marriage, following the role she supposed to play as wife to society. After a few incidents, Edna realizes the lack of passion and ambitions she has in her life. Unsatisfied, Edna seeks out ways to find her independence; her life aspirations change from living comfortably as a conventional wife to discovering an “awaken” version of her. …show more content…
Before her transformation, Edna abides to conventional societal responsibilities. In Chopin’s time era, society was patriarchal and women did not usually voice their opinions. By openly disclosing Edna’s feeling about sexual desire and personal pursuit to find herself, Chopin realistically depicts the true thoughts of females that are often hidden or unrecognized. When Chopin’s husband died, she is left to take care of her children. She possibly might have face obstacles to really find an “awaken”state of herself due to motherhood. Chopin is able to translate her own experiences in her personal life through Edna. She is fundamentally a woman retelling the real problems females face in her time
